Kiev – Ukraine
Ukrainian capital city Kiev is an increasingly popular tourist destination. According to legend, the city was founded around the Fifth Century by Shchek, Khoryv, Lybid and Kyi, from whom it took its name.
Kiev has plenty to offer tourists. The city had a turbulent Twentieth Century, under the rule of Soviet Moscow, but has recently rediscovered its individuality and has a thriving cultural life and some of the wildest night time entertainment in Europe.
Kiev’s holy sites, of which Pechersk Lavra (the Monastery of the Caves) and Saint Sophia Cathedral are arguably the best known, have attracted pilgrims for centuries. Both have recently been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are a tourist attraction and are well worth a visit for anyone interested in architecture or religion.
The city is steeped in musical heritage and this is reflected in the variety of venues to be found in Kiev. The Kiev Opera House, Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Theatre of Russian Drama, Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre, Kiev Puppet Theatre, October Palace and National Philharmonic of Ukraine are all significant cultural destinations.
The National Art Museum of Ukraine, constructed in 1898 by architect Vladislav Gorodetsky and originally called the Kiev City Museum of Antiques and Art, contains works by artists including Vladimir Borovikovsky, Vasily Andreevich Tropinin, Taras Shevchenko, Ilya Yefimovich Repin, Mykola Pimonenko and Oleksandr Murashko among many others. In total, there are more than twenty thousand pieces on display.
Summer in Kiev
Locals say that you can walk from one end of Kiev to the other in the summertime without leaving the shade of the city’s trees. One popular location to take a stroll is Park Peremohy (Victory Park); a popular destination for walkers, joggers, and cyclists.
In the high summer, the centre of Kiev (Independence Square and Khreschatyk Street) becomes a destination for party people, with thousands of revellers heading to nearby restaurants, clubs and outdoor cafes to chat, drink and dance the night away.
