Pechersk Lavra is a Christian Orthodox monastery in Kiev, an impressive place of worship towards which millions of people go, every year, from all around the world.
The building is also recognized as the Monastery of the Caves and was named “One of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine”, based on the vote given by experts and the internet community.
The first data about Pechersk Lavra appeared at the beginning of the 11th century, when Anthony, an Orthodox monk who lived on Mount Athos decided to settle in the region that was deserted at that time. Monk Anthony chose to live in a cave overlooking Dnieper River on Mount Berestov. Step by step, the community of disciples grew due to the monks who decided that the caves were the perfect place where they could live in prayer. Prince Iziaslav I of Kiev appreciated so much the courage of the monks that he decided to assist them to build a real place of worship.
