I noticed some users have been commenting on my Facebook link “Kyiv”.
This was an advertisement we placed with Facebook in order to promote the website Kiev City Guide. I saw many Ukrainian users posted in response to that advertisement link “Kyiv!”
I did not understand first but another user posted a link for me to see.
I translated this link and put it below.
Lvov, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa – all this is a consequence of Russification in Soviet times. Time has to write our names in the map correctly. So the whole world supports Ukrainian flash mob, telling about it on their pages on social networks, writes the newspaper “Express” .
– The basic principle Ukrainian-English transliteration is “phonetic ukrayinotsentryzm” providing transliteruvannya directly from the Ukrainian word for Ukrainian and phonetic samples without any intermediary language – says Ivan Tsihotskyy, Candidate of Philology Lviv National University. Franko. – Therefore, Kyiv, Lviv, Rivne, Mykolayiv, Kharkiv , Odesa, not Kiev, Lvov, Rovno, Nikolaev, Kharkov, Odessa.
However, this rule always applies only to official documents. A private person correspondence is served by such transliteration, which it is convenient. By 1996, Ukraine did not have regulations for playback Ukrainian names in English because the authorities used Soviet transliteration rules, based on the phonetic rules of Russian.

In response to this request I would like to make the following comments. I respect your input and I will make effort to include the name Kyiv in our website where it applies. However until the Western World recognizes the spelling Kyiv instead Kiev, I am forced to use Kiev in our advertisements because I am trying to get the website picked up on the search engines by the spelling which the city is mostly recognized.
This reminds of the struggle Turkish people had in the western spelling of the country name after the Turkish republic was founded in 1923. The name of the country Türkiye was spelled out as Turkey (the funny looking chicken / bird which makes the funny sound).
So I do understand your point on how you feel.
I hope that I can help use the correct spelling of your city Kyiv where I can.
